Arab Women: #1 Make up

Makeup is a very important part of Arab women life. Specially when there’s an important occasion, they tend to turn it into a makeup competition.makeup3

This sounds normal so far, but the thing is, Arab women have a very strict and unique definition of make up. The more the woman looks like a witch the better.

It’s a competition of how thick the foundation they put on, the variety of colors used (orange, green, red, and yellow all together), and how big the eyes look.

The end result is, of course, a clown face that can only impress other Arab women. They will spend the occasion looking at each other, and checking out who looks “whiter”,  who has the most reddish cheeks, and of course who has the biggest eyes.

The end result is  more or less like this:

    You started this war! Bring it on “boy” !

    I think make up as viewed by Arab women, those living in the Middle East specially is thought to enhance “natural” beauty – a scarecrow would look stunning layered under that Undertaker shade foundation needless to add the “Green Arbres” eyeshadow shade which resembles molokheyah puke yukh!

    Prepare for retaliation!

  2. Poky Face says:

    and poor Ledger! Man looks delicious even if dead!

  3. Hala says:

    some women look like witches with their ugly make up but there is also a lot of butiful women and butiful make up

  4. h3rm1ny3w says:

    Hala,

    yes I know that, I’m in love with Arab girl myself

  5. Rayan says:

    yeah i agree with this point :P they really wear too much makeup, i have always loved girls with no makeup at all

  6. h3rm1ny3w says:

    @ Rayan:

    yeah, it’s really rare to see someone with nice make up on..sad they ruin their looks usually

  7. nora says:

    hey there… im an arab from australia, while i liked some of your posts and found them funny… others went too far, and were quite vulgar for a Muslim, Arab girl to be talking bout. you can still get your point across without the crude pictures and language… your only embarrasing yourself!

  8. h3rm1ny3w says:

    @ Nora:

    I’m sorry you feel this way…but just for your information, I’m writing here with an Arab Muslim Hijabi girl, and I am Arab Muslim too.

    We were obviously trying to be sarcastic and didn’t intent any insult. What pictures are you talking about in specific ? And what language are you referring to ?

  9. Hafssa says:

    hey slms..huever u r…i must tell u dis i have t agree with nora..specially becoz u as a muslim shudnt even be commenting on others…i mean ur topics were great and funny i agree bt der is no need to talk about muslim women…in no part of the world are der women better dan real muslim women…and wyl some of us are struggling to keep our image and respect up…ppl lyk u are destroying it…u obviously dnt nw bt ur sarcasm can affect islam in various ways..
    trust me mt dear i nw im an alimah and i mean no harm…

  10. h3rm1ny3w says:

    Dear Hafssa,

    I totally understand, being a Muslim myself, that it’s sometimes hard for us to accept critisizm.

    I’m just pointing out something that I personally noticed in our society. It’s not that I made up anything, it’s there and we see it everything, and I wasn’t demeaning or deranging anybody, on the contrary, I was just showing something that’s there in our society. We, as Muslims, should accept critisizm, and we shouldn’t discriminate between insult and critisizm.

    I respect your input though, but to each his own.

  11. tiktak says:

    I never liked arabic makeup it’s too much and looks clownish.

  12. shaza says:

    ooo cumon u bn too rude now! nt evry women wears tons of make-up my mum is an arab she hardly ever wears make up and she is one gorgous mum..so if i was you i wud correct myself b4 posting childish comment abt arab womens..get a grip!

  13. kalilah says:

    I do not think that you are arabic or muslims. You’d better look at other societies and try to see the huge difference between an arabic muslim girl and someone else. In addition, don’t you see that they also are trying to look like us with our black hair and black eyebrows. They go crazy when they see the arabic beauty in contrast to their pale faces that have no color or attraction. I pity you thinking this way because arabic girls deserve much more than that and I do not appreciate the fact that you are arabs yourselves.

  14. h3rm1ny3w says:

    @Kalilah:

    sorry but you took it the very wrong way. We’re not comparing, and you’re being racist by saying pale faces, bla bla, this is not so Muslim, so I suggest you understand Islam first before you speak on the behalf of a religion. We didn’t denounce Arab girls by no mean.

    We just pointed out there’s a heavy make up problem, end of story. No big deal here, if you want to take it a negative way of your own, then that’s your problem.

  15. h3rm1ny3w says:

    @Shaza:

    Where exactly did I say that all Arabian (not Arabic*)women put on heavy Make up ? so we’re the ones being childish here ? :)

  16. filmiki says:

    You may have not intended to do so, but I think you have managed to express the state of mind that a lot of people are in. The sense of wanting to help, but not knowing how or where, is something a lot of us are going through.

  17. ely says:

    very good

  18. layla13 says:

    i adore makeup and always wear it when i go out and even do my makeup when i dont go out lol. but the way they have the arabladies wear their makeup for tv and weddings is just too much. it can look very good if not overdone. the witchy look is pretty but i dont like when its so much makeup and fake lined eyebrows that it looks like a drag queen. whats wrong with using some eyeborw pencil on the brow without making it arch up tooooo high! thats why ppl say like a clown. i personally love black eyeliner and i wear no blush or lipstick except maybe a small amount of lip gloss clear. all in moderation looks best.

  19. h3rm1ny3w says:

    @Layla13:

    I agree with you, it’s nice when it’s done properly, and it’s not nice when it’s too much (clownish).

    Welcome to our blog and thanks for reading and commenting :) keep coming back !

  20. somegirl says:

    I love Arabic makeup if it is done with a good taste. I am an American woman, but I did have Arabic makeup before when I attended parties. The key is to have a good makeup artist who know what they are doing, blend the colors properly and make sure it suits you well depending on the hair color, eye color, skin color etc… I do not see a point however making yourself white when you are not. Match the foundation to your skin color. Most important is healthy skin and fresh face. The skin color does not matter at all.

    I think if it is properly balanced it would look very, very nice.

  21. h3rm1ny3w says:

    @somegirl:

    I’m gonna have to agree with you again !

  22. sara says:

    i can defend women of Arab and speak but why ? so foreign men will look at women in our country ? its bad enough that many rape crimes and teen pregnancy in foreign countries so i think its good to say that about us makes less foreign people come to us, thank you nothing personal but we need to get u all out of our country. so keep it up !

  23. ericka says:

    im new here, like the site, and its nice to read a different pint of view about arab way of living.
    Im mexican, and I completely understand this is kind of sarcastic, and I appreciate a more open view from muslim people.
    Really liked it, and I still respect a lot arab culture and muslim people. :-) From Mexico

  24. El guia says:

    No se de ti ericka, pero si tienes descendencia española algo de sangre árabe corre por tus venas, y es que lo que está claro, es que la union cultural de lo español y lo árabe siempre da muy buenos resultados, mira por ejemplo, el flamenco.

    For the rest, i comented to the mexican girl in spanish language, that arab and spanish cultures are always giving good results when together, looking for example, flamenco music, or, as you know very well, the islamic golden era.

    And another question, i’ve heard around that make up was “invented” by arabs, so is natural if arab people like it, if this is true.

  25. muslima_canadiana says:

    I just came accross your blog here and it is awsome.. some of the people who comented are quiet volgure.. some refuse to see the problems.. any way wether muslim or not. arabian make up is nice but soem over do it. he didnt say nothing about ohh the bad muslim girlssss.. yes as a muslim i see myself girls are more into fasion than regualar canadians and americans.. so to the people insulting this persons blog. you get your info straight.. now asalamalikum peace be with ya all.. and ISLAM MEANS PEACE SO PEOPLE BE PEACE FULL.

  26. h3rm1ny3w says:

    @Muslima_Candiana :

    THANK YOU ! thanks for understanding that people fail to see that there IS an actual problem here discussed, they take things personal and fail to take a second and think that maybe, just MAYBE, this is a REAL problem…

    thanks again ! I hope you keep reading my posts :)

  27. kylie says:

    @kalilah – What a racist comment about the pale faces! I am married to an arab man who is very attracted to my pale skin, brown hair and green eyes. You obviously give yourself too much credit sweetheart! By the way i don’t wear makeup and i don’t need too.

  28. El guia says:

    Pale or Dark (not in negative ways, just as adjectives). In countries where people is darker, people usually prefers “pale”, blonde and light-eyed people, in countries where people is lighter, happens the opposite, beauty means tanned skin, dark hairs and dark eyes, i suppose because for them is more exotic, and calls more the atention. In spain we have strange case, we are considered darker than the “average” caucasians, women usually prefer “lighter” men (like northern ones) and men prefer darker women (like the arab, persian, indian, or spanish indeed…). Also, in countries where people is dark, there are sold milions of lightening creams, in countries where people is light, the creams are tanning. I don’t think is racism, just a matter of likes.

  29. Sera says:

    hello ladies. I love reading all the comments and different opinions its really eye opening. On the subject of makeup it all comes down to the individual woman and how confidient she is with her NATURAL looks. I prefer not to wear makeup, moisturise my face and keep powder free unless there is an occasion. When that occasion arises the little make up the better. Each woman must experient and see what suits her best. A Little doenst hurt as long as she does not go over board espeically on the eyeliner.
    I know these two women they are young than me one in her mid thirties the other reaching the 50 mark. If we are out having coffee and they rock up they exit their car all dolled up just to have coffee, with massive high heels, hair all done up and Way way too much makeup for Day wear. As I sit sipping my coffee in jeans and a t-shirt I wonder who these ladies are trying to impress. And never any of the men sitting either with me at a table with a group of friends or with other people give these ladies a second look. BUT……. I can not say anything to these ladies, as much as I would like to say to them, to remain youthful looking you must let your skin breathe stay away from constant wear of makeup. Each to their own I guess.

  30. Lalin says:

    What she wrote didn’t even have anything to do with islam. I grew up in Kuwait and back in 2005 2006 its was really witchy but its getting better they also use to do the big hair thing but they got over that too I suppose its about the trends.. I only see witchy ones at seesha cafes but you can’t blame em cos they are old and want to look pretty but I do agree at weddings to go over board and I hate the large amount of concealer and bronzer well its true they don’t look like victoria secret models (make up naturalish face) and some look like cheap hookers others but others are actually sweet inside. The conclusion is they do wear a lot of make up and quit the racism because its not even related to make up and all of you should stop accusing the poor girl for not being muslim cos that isn’t what she is talking about. actually to. Bald buff men who wear sun glasses at nigght these women are very hot to them its a matter of taste but oh well
